WAYNE MANOR spins rockin' Xmas unknowns at SWANK
SWANK is a long-running record hop in Tokyo that is run by garage disc jockey king Hiroshi Sekuguchi along with a number of the metropolis' finest DJs including Rie from STOMPIN' RIFF RAFFS, Erostika manager Wild Ox, the wierdos that make up the DJ duo YUKKUM YUKKUM, namely the pint-sized OKD & sleaze-meister Mr. Death, as well as, record collector extraordinaire Matsui from fabled Teenage Babylon fame. As Wayne Manor is somewhat of a specialist in Christmas novelties and yuletide trash, he decided to test the old adage "ask and you shall receive" and begged Hiroshi to give him a chance to join SWANK as a guest DJ for a very special Xmas party... Lo and behold the Christmas wish was granted! Come on out to MEMPHIS KYODAI in SHIMO-KITAZAWA on Thursday, December 22nd to get your Christmas on and hop to some fine Rock'n Yule tunes!
Oh, and chances are THE SPITFIRES from Perth, Australia will be there getting a taste of real rockin' Tokyo. Admission is free so stop by for a meet and greet and to know them before their Japan tour kicks off the following day!

LIVE REPORT! MYSTERY MONDAYS Vol.12, NO November Part 2
Continuing the tradition of celebrating the No Wave movement with eclectic punk and avant garde sounds, MYSTERY MONDAYS invited a couple off-beat Japanese garage bands know for skewing their sounds with experimental rhythms and odd instrumentation.
Opening the show was a more recently formed buzz band called DAncer DAnger who are known for playing post-punk originals alongside garage classics. This night they laid out some tight rhythms for an authentic dance punk sound that tipped its hat to the New York indie scene with an ESG cover.
Returning from last year's No November soiree, ROCKET JACK VADERS amazed the crowd with their surfy No Wave sounds and intense stage presence. Dual guitarists Sue, with his angular moves and angered shouts, and Shinko, who sports a fashionable mystique, traded off on some of their recognizable songs from their definitive release "Vector."
Spinning a random mix of New York poetry punk, arsty new wave and world beat, DJ Wayne Manor was at your service. After she dropped her bass, DJ TOMMI TOKYO stationed herself at the turntables offering up some funky beats and new wave dance classics. Keep the 24 hour party rolling until next year. Over and out.

MYSTERY MONDAYS Vol. 12, NO November Part 2
Preparations are being made for the next Mystery Mondays.... it's PART 2 of our annual NO WAVE party in November! This year we have ROCKET JACK VADERS returning. RJV are a band that came to prominence in the Japanese garage scene as a surf band, but went experimental and started mixing odd instrumentation for a No Wave sound. Also joining the soiree is DAncer DAnger a relatively new band that fuses American garage and UK post-punk. Bass player DJ TOMI TOKYO be spinning British sounds of the post-punk era along with NY No Wave and yours truly, The Stately DJ WAYNE MANOR will be playing a mix of post-punk, new wave and avant garde on vinyl. This has been a message to all you 4 hour party people out there in Tokyo!

LIVE REPORT: MYSTERY MONDAYS Vol. 11, Halloween Hangover!
Halloween this year was a very busy time between all the tours happening and the Back from the Grave Halloween Ball where the Rip-offs tore another one in Tokyo! As chance would have it, Halloween Day fell on a Monday so we could have a real Halloween party at Heavy Sick for Mystery Mondays... and luckily we had a skeleton crew of party-goers still in the mood for costumes and spooky fun!
MACH5 really helped keep the spirit alive with their classic Japanese manga outfits and hyper garage punk instros and great covers like The Rezillo's "Flying Saucer Attack!"
Then some kinda witchery appeared on stage in the form of Black&Blue, delving into the Japanese female psyche with a modern Showa-fusion inspired set.
Japanese rockers NETANOYOI provided tribal rock & reggae rhythms calling out spirits the spirits that haunt Heavy Sick to chill.
The last band of the evening, ANDROID BEACH PARTY burst out with some Street Fighter action and wild sci-fi-inspired instrumental tunes for a Halloween grand finale!
A Halloween party would not have been possible without the crazy people that came in costume and the DJs, namely SACHI B and BILLY TRASH of the infamous Ed Woods! I believe we've kept the ghouls at bay until next year at least!

Friends in the post-punk/garage band DAncer DAnger have invited The Stately DJ Wayne Manor to spin some new wave, punk and indie records at DOM STUDIO in Koenji this Saturday night. Prepare yourself for the sounds of CODE, KORAKORA and, of course, DAncer DAnger!
DJ WAYNE MANOR spins for NEON HEARTS

LIVE REPORT! MYSTERY MONDAYS Vol.9, "Baritsu Attack!"
(PINCH OF SNUFF)
Two motley groups of Irish trad & folk lovin' ramblers converged on Club Heavy Sick last Monday, the 29th of August, in the year two thousand and eleven. The first mob to take the stage was Pinch of Snuff, a local group of Japanese buskers with a vast array of musical armaments including tin whistle, fiddle, accordion, cajon, bodhran, bass and featuring Tiger on acoustic guitars and brash vocals. His drawl lends itself nicely to traditional numbers like "Danny Boy" as well as their own rustic versions of modern songs like the Beatles "I've Just Seen A Face." And the band made instrumental sounds of Ireland come to life on an otherwise slow & muggy Monday night.
(MUTINY)
Next, the thrashy folk group Mutiny climbed the decks of the good ship Heavy Sick! These paddy rockin' buccaneers are know for playing some of the more notable Irish pubs of port Tokyo and this night they showed up with Paul on mandolin, Alex on acoustic guitar and Greg who plays bodhran while growling out some of the more traditional Irish tunes like "The Black Velvet Band," "I'll Tell Me Ma" and "Whiskey in the Jar." Fiddle, accordion and double bass rounded out their sound on this occasion.
(PINCH OF SNUFF with MUTINY)
For the last song, the Pinch of Snuff gang decided to storm the ship and join the "Mutiny," so to speak! Both crews crammed on the wee stage and jammed a farewell to summer like the devil! Special thanks to DJ THE JAPANESE BASTARD who played a think set between the gangs of buskers which included a heavy mix of bohemian rustic and Irish hodge podge like RAVFEN & FARLER'S FURY that can be found on his import label UNCLEOWEN music. Yours truly, The Stately DJ Wayne Manor selected some more rockin' tunes by the Clancy Brothers, Johnny Burnette (with The Shamrocks) as well as some paddy greaser tunes by CRAiC HAUS with their self-styled "shamrockabilly" sound!
(DJ THE JAPANESE BASTARD - UNCLEOWEN)
"Baritsu Attack" was a rescheduling of the MYSTERY MONDAYS "St. Patrick's Party" that was canceled due to the Great East Japan Earthquake that occurred on March 11, 2011. I compiled a downloadable benefit comp entitled "HEAL THE COAST: A Homespun Tsunami Benefit" now available on Pacifiction Records. PINCH OF SNUFF, along with Royal SHAMROCK & MoDERN B BEARD, appears courtesy of UNCLEOWEN Music.

MYSTERY MONDAYS Vol. 9, "BARITSU ATTACK"
MYSTERY MONDAYS Vol.9 is proud to present "BARITSU ATTACK!," a night of Irish folk and punk with Japanese rovers PINCH OF SNUFF (featuring members of Royal SHAMROCK!) and the Tokyo-based thrash folk band MUTINY! Special guest DJ THE JAPANESE BASTARD from UNCLEOWEN music will be supplying a brash mix of rustic stomp and The Stately Wayne Manor will be spinning an assortment of pirate punk and rockin' Irish tunes across the ages.

HOUSE of MYSTERY Vol.4, "House of the Dolls"
Welcome back to the HOUSE of MYSTERY, boys & girls! This past August 13th, was an fiercely female night of estrogen-fueled antics and adventure! Five gravely glamorous groups of Japanese femme-fatales appeared on stage at Club Heavy Sick along with special attractions including a sneak-peek screening of B-movie maniac Chris' footage for his tentatively title slasher flick "I Ain't Your Geisha!" and special burlesque dance performance by the lovely Baby Rita! Last but not least, special thanks to DJs Sachi B and Meg the Eyeball for assisting myself, the Stately DJ Wayne Manor, with sinister record spinning!
(THE PHANTASMS)
THE PHANTASMS were the first band to materialize on stage invoking a kinda girls in the garage meets 70's powerpop style. Their cutesy demeanor and bubbly stage presence mixed with an array of covers from divers performers like The Undertones to Billie Davis wowed the early-comers. A special treat was a surfy girl pop version of THE SHAPES' "I Saw Batman in the Laundrette!"
(VILLAINZ)
A blender full of horror punk, organ-powered garage and a heavy dose of raw psychobilly is what's in the VILLAINZ' cocktail. And the crowd drunk up during their haunting set which included original favorites like "Pray of Devil" classics like Shocking Blue's "Venus!"
After the audience picked up their jaws from the watching the Villainz, there was a short intermission where aspiring horror movie and music video filmmaker Chris showed his two Harpy's videos "Tut" and "Crushed Cake" and a shocking slasher clips from his work-in-progress which features detached Japanese women exact their revenge on a male-dominated modern society, like Maki who (The Harpy's) slashes up random guys (like Billy Trash of Ed Woods) with her trusty box cutter!
(THE MERCIES)
Stepping back in time to London circa '62, The Mercies then graced the stage with their old-period Beatles stylings. Quite popular in the Japanese mod and garage scene lately, these four young gals from Tokyo cause a quite a rave-up at the House of Dolls, I didn't even have to ask them to please please me!
(The MADAME CATS)
As always, The Madame Cats rocked hard with their gritty garage blended with Japanese mystique and intrigue. When leader of the pack Madame Who wails on her harmonica the room seems to swirl and when she shakes her maracas wildly, she seems to shake her fans up along with them!
(BABY RITA)
A second intermission featured slinky burlesque dancer Baby Rita slither across stage in her sexy black lingerie which appeared to evaporate amidst hoots and howls to reveal nothing but a delicate face and porcelain skin in a feather boa mist!
(THE PAPPYS)
House of Dolls was also a big chance to dance with The Pappy's, one of the legendary Japanese girls bands still playing around Tokyo and the final band of the night! These three cheeky girls in the garage blitzed through a set of headstrong 60's pop via Ramones style punk! Indeed they might have even called the spirit of Joey Ramone back from the grave for Obon (Japan's festival of the dead happening over the weekend) with their encore of "Rock 'n' Roll Radio!"
(DJ MEG THE EYEBALL)
The Stately DJ Wayne Manor thanks all those involved, including DJs Meg the Eyeball for her wild, random and twisted tunes as well as Sachi B for her punk & psycho playlist and taking the pictures for this blog! Hope to see you all again when the door of the HOUSE of MYSTERY are swung open for the next freakout!

LIVE REPORT: MYSTERY MONDAYS Vol. 8, "Hanabi in a Bottle!"
This past week hanabi, or fireworks in Japanese, were captured in a bottle with two up-and-coming Tokyo garage bands and the eclectic sounds of the dynamic DJ duo MAMA CHARI!
On their second performance yet, DAncer DAnger burst on the stage at Heavy Sick with sparkles of white light and heat as they experimented with melding 60's garage with post-punk! Their adroit covers of The Sonics and The Velvet Undergound as well as their own meld of NY rock'n'roll and British post-punk ensure DA-DA, as they are affectionately known, a place in the current Tokyo underground.

In the meantime, MAMA CHARI, the double dose of lounge pop provided by DJ DANDY & DJ RONSOME entertained the crowd with a fizzy cocktail of sounds ranging from exotica to psyche, soul, Japanese group sounds and French pop!
(MAMA CHARI feat. DJ DANDY upfront & DJ RONSOME in the background)
The final band, another garage group only on their second outing, the all-girl trio MELVINS were a bottle-rocket of classic American garage sound lead by the screeching vocals of Kumi-chan! After their enrapturing set, they left the audience demanding an encore which they delivered... a wild rendition of "Louie Louie" which sounded much like a homage to the One Way Streets, albeit through the shouts of Japanese girls!
(MELVINS)
Another fine production brought to you by THE STATELY DJ WAYNE MANOR with the backing of CLUB HEAVY SICK in Hatagaya, Tokyo where we always try to capture a little hanabi in a bottle!

The latest installment of MYSTERY MONDAYS is a titillating star-burst! It's a tribute to summertime featuring a special lounge duo by the name of MAMA CHARI consisting of DJ DANDY hailing from NY & Japanese native DJ RONSOME mixing up a palatable cocktail of exotica, psychedelic and space-age bachelor pad music! Your ever-loving host THE STATELY DJ WAYNE MANOR will be supplying supplemental ingredients, enough to stuff in your bottle-rocket! As for live music, there will be the all-girl garage trio MELVINS (yes, three Japanese girls and NOT King Buzzo & the legendary grunge band!) as well as the eclectic garage punk sounds of DAncer DAnger! Hanabi, or fireworks in Japanese, are an integral part of the "natsu" season, we've decidedly captured some "Hanabi in a Bottle" for ya, so enjoy!

LIVE REPORT: MYSTERY MONDAYS Vol. 7, "Boys Nite Out!"
Mystery Mondays kicked off summer with a nite of Japanese punk featuring a fierce trio of bands making headway in the current Tokyo powerpop scene. DJ Harry the Hempstead Heath was spinning a mix of old punk & neo-mods and yours truly, The Stately DJ Wayne Manor crammed as much heyday punk as I could in between sets!
The NERVOUS HEARTS, with Taka6 from The Scar and The Fadeaways personnel Toyozo on lead and drummer Ozawa making his last appearance with the group, took to the stage first. They ripped through a bunch of '77 punk style tunes albeit with a slight 60's punk vibe Toyozo can't seem to shake. All the better for them!
Next up STAIRS came on sounding much like lost NY punk relic with their rough edges and skittish demeanor. While they might be at the front of the powerpop movement these days, I'm glad there's nothing too sweet about their stabbing songwriting and spurring stage presence.
Finally THE LEGS took to the stage, quite an honor since they were a guest at the very first Mystery Mondays! This band plays fast and tight and they rammed through set of sonically riveting powerpop songs that I can't wait to hear again! In fact The Stately DJ Wayne Manor has been invite to DJ their big show coming up this September 24th at the UFO Club which will also feature Stairs along with other Tokyo bands at the top of the pops like Rockbottom, Rangsteen, & Sunsett! More info on this chic party later!
Until next time... Yours truly,
The Stately Wayne Manor

MYSTERY MONDAYS Vol. 7, "Boys Nite Out!"
Welcome to another spectacular edition of MYSTERY MONDAYS featuring a triple riot by some of the up-and-coming Japanese bands with a throwback sound to the original punk era and making headway in th current Tokyo power pop scene. THE LEGS were one of the first bands to play MYSTERY MONDAYS waaaay back last August! And some of you might remember NERVOUS HEARTS from the more recent Valentine's Day Rumble hosted by yours truly, The Stately DJ Wayne Manor. You can trip up 'em, you can fall down 'em, STAIRS is one of the more recent and rowdy bands out there with a 7" of their own on Target Earth Records, they're playing MYSTERY MONDAYS for the first time! I will be spinning a mix of 70's punk, maybe a couple Mods tunes and some post-punk. The featured DJ, HARRY the HEMPSTEAD HEATH will be supplying more powerpop rarities than you can shake a rubber at! It's a Monday, it's not easy, but it's a fine nite for a boys nite Out!

MYSTERY MONDAYS Vol. 6, "Last Days of May" & Wayne Manor's Birthday Party!
So every year Mods run amok all around Japan. They've been doing so for nearly 30 years ever since the first Mods Mayday scooter run in 1980 or '81. I find myself endeared to this custom, not for being a Mod myself or for any real reason in particular. I just love the coming of Spring and I have an affinity for Mod culture and the music and style of the 6t's. Well, since I had begun doing Mystery Mondays, I had planned for a special homage of my own. I checked the calendar this year and lo and behold, my birthday had fallen on a Monday, the last Monday of May to be exact! So while all my mates in the States were off for Memorial Day, I had a birthday bash with some Japanese garage bands and dubbed my party "The Last Days of May!"
After an initial set of British invasion music by myself and some northern soul by Japanese DJ extraordinaire Harry the Hempstead Heath, the event was sparked by THE MADAME CATS, and their blur of Showa pop/girl garage tunes... They brought a number of the boys in the crowd to their knees calling for an encore and more!
Much like the little drummer boy bringing song as their only gift, THEEE BAT came on stage playing not only their version of the "Batman Theme" but extending their set to include my favorite tunes like the Stooges' " I Wanna Be Your Dog" which they called me onstage to howl along to, as well as my all-time favorite "Sometimes the Good Guys Don't Wear White" by The Standells. And then dragging back up to the mic for "Neat Neat Neat," The Damned classic which I had requested they play more over soup at a friend's house just a few weeks earlier!
Usually a listless Monday, the MINNESOTA VOODOO MEN pressed the manic button! Straight off their stint in the weekend's Mods Mayday at Sendai City, they gave it 110% and ran the show into over time! Amidst a birthday ordinance of tequila shots (of course while playing "Tequila") and classics & originals from their own set, random guests from THEEE BAT, THE MADAME CATS and even THE MERCIES grabbed the VOODOOMEN's instruments and took over while they presumably filled their cups and got back to business! Wild girls dancing onstage, drunk freaks in the crowd, Fabian hanging from the rafters, this recalled the early days seeing them in Tokyo after my first arrival nearly five years ago! And now, on a Monday no less, and on my birthday! The magic has not gone anywhere!
Special thanks to the staff of CLUB HEAVY SICK in Tokyo, DJ HARRY THE HEMPSTEAD HEATH, THE MADAME CATS, THEEE BAT, MINNESOTA VOODOO MEN and all the friends who came out this spectacular evening... I was unlucky enough to stiff you all and get the last train home!

MYSTERY MONDAYS Vol.6, "Last Days of May"
Every May, all the Japanese mods rev up their scooters for parties across the nation. This is the Stately DJ Wayne Manor's reaction! This month's MYSTERY MONDAYS features garage-beat group MINNESOTA VOODOO MEN coupled with the Showa-garage, edgy cabaret chansons of THE MADAME CATS! Not to mention, an international cast of DJs including Japan's 6t's connoisseur HARRY the HEMPSTEAD HEATH, French garage-pysche specialist CYRIL ROY and the everloving slickster WAYNE MANOR.

THE HARPY's presents: Kidding me! Vol. 1
Last month I had the fortunate opportunity to DJ at my long-time friends THE HARPY's first try at throwing a party of their own! The event, aptly titled "Kidding me!," was an Alice in Wonderland-themed party which had Maki dressed as an improvised Mad Hatter, Satomi as a roly Cheshire Neko and Tomo as, of course, an almost geisha-like Alice. But so much more than a typical Japanese indies affair, this evening featured dapper powerpop trio TENNIS PRO on tour from Seattle, USA! Heaven's Door in Sangenjaya, Tokyo was filled to the brim with mad tea-partyers, and Wayne Manor, with side-kick Setsuko, had a splendid time at their very first invitation as guest DJs.
